What to Expect at Your First Drum Lesson at Drum Club

If you’re thinking about starting drum lessons in Macclesfield—whether for yourself or your child—your first session at Drum Club is an exciting step.

But like anything new, it can also come with a few nerves. That’s totally normal! So here’s a breakdown of what to expect at your first lesson with us, so you can arrive feeling confident and ready to play.

👋 A Warm Welcome (and No Pressure!)

From the moment you walk into Drum Club, we want you to feel relaxed and at home. Whether you’re aged 6 or 66, we tailor each lesson to you—your level, your goals, and your pace.

There’s no pressure to perform or impress. In fact, many of our new students have never touched a drum kit before their first lesson. That’s what we’re here for.

🥁 Meet the Kit

In your first session, you’ll get hands-on with the drum kit.

We’ll introduce you to the basic parts of the kit:

  • Snare
  • Bass drum (kick)
  • Hi-hats
  • Toms
  • Cymbals

You’ll learn how each part sounds, what it’s for, and how to sit with good posture and hand positioning.

Already have some experience?
Let us know and we’ll dive into a level that challenges you—whether that’s building technique, exploring new grooves, or polishing timing.

🎵 Your First Beats

Next, we’ll help you play your first rhythm. It might be a simple rock groove, a coordination exercise, or even part of a familiar song.

You’ll explore:

  • Basic sticking (left-right hand patterns)
  • Keeping time with a pulse
  • Playing a rhythm on different parts of the kit

Don’t worry if it takes a few goes—we keep it fun, relaxed, and beginner-friendly.

📖 What You’ll Learn (Even in Lesson One)

Even after one session, you’ll walk away with:

  • A clear understanding of how the kit works
  • A basic rhythm or beat under your belt
  • Confidence to practise at home (with or without a kit)
  • A big grin—and probably some slightly tired arms!

🧑‍🏫 Who You’ll Be Learning With

Your lesson will be with Jamie, Drum Club’s lead tutor. He’s an experienced, DBS-checked drum teacher with a patient, down-to-earth teaching style. He’s great with both kids and adults, and adapts lessons to fit each learner’s personality and goals.

💬 What to Bring

  • Just yourself! We provide all drums, sticks and materials.
  • If you have your own sticks or music, feel free to bring them.
  • A bottle of water and closed shoes are handy too.

✅ After the First Lesson

We’ll have a chat about how it went, and if you’re keen to continue, we’ll recommend a lesson plan to suit your pace—weekly, fortnightly or flexible booking. You can even book in a few sessions upfront and save with block booking.
